I think that C.H.A.M.P.S. is a good behavior management program that should be used in its entirety to be effective and to achieve the desired results.
ReplyDeleteOfcourse, we use it at different times and for some issues, but the though would be to implement this program in its entirety so that your behavior management process can be effective at all times.
Setting expectations is important, but the difficult task is managing these expectations at a level that stays positive and productive.
Going over expectations when needed can help to reinforce them and allow for growth and changes in students behavior, at the same time teacher reflection can help to implement change to achieve the desired outcomes.
Grace Munoz, 5th Grade Teacher at Trix Academy
ReplyDeleteThe implementation of C.H.A.M.P.S. could really help my scholars by clearly communicating expectations. When I as the teacher can be explicit in instruction, many are likely to follow those instructions and those who don't can be held accountable because they knew what their behavior was intended to be.
The TLC strategies shared in the meeting also help with this expectation as they are introduced with clear instructions as to how scholars should respond to each strategy. Helping scholars have signals of when to be quiet make for less confusion or shouting over scholars asking them to quiet down. Making clear rules for the SLANT acronym helps scholars think about what engaged listeners look like. Building this habit of showing engagement with body language will help scholars socially as they progress in school as well as better prepare them for work environments in the future.
In my classroom, these expectations have been a point of struggle thus far. I can be much clearer in the way I express my expectations before each activity, and using something like CHAMPS may help scholars remember the things I've laid out. I plan to incorporate more attention getters into my room as well as think about a way that I can incorporate my expectations before each activity. I may use the CHAMPS strategy, but I plan to look at other similar strategies and find the one that I think will work best for my instruction. I also plan to be more intentional about my specific compliments to students. I think this will strengthen relationships with students and make it more likely for scholars to be more engaged and listen to instructions. I plan to ask my mentor for ideas that she uses for noticing and taking time to make these compliments, as well as any attention getting chants or call-and-responses that she has found to be successful.
Rachel Schaffner, 7th grade at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy
ReplyDeleteThe implantation of CHAMPS would enhance instruction as i will be able to teach for longer periods of time but also me an the students would be on the same page. This would also help outside of classrooms as my classroom rules are the same as the school rules. So they would also be on the same page for understanding the school rules. It will also cut down the amount of disciple and ISS or OSS, the school or class would have, If not implemented. Attention is better by moving hands up, student raise hands and a firm voice count to 5 and all is silent.
The use of the 4 TLC would improve scholar behavior and academic experience in the classroom and beyond by showing and having student practice skill they will use in life. Using SLANT will allow the student to use skill that will help them when talking to friends but also when they go to interview. When someone is talking to you, you want them to show these skill as it shows they are paying attention to you and what you are saying. No Opt. out will allow the student to get the help they need even if they don't you are giving them help in a timely manor and not later.
My Current level of success regarding setting expectations is low or low-middle. the Implantations of CHAMPS will help me severely as the students will know my expectations on the activity and my classroom. My attention getter is "if you can hear me clap #" my next step to improve is working and repeating expectations many times until all students know what is expected in class. I will use my attention getter when we are transitioning. My mentor could help me by showing and explaining how they Use CHAMPS or TLC in their classroom.
