I would define self-care as the ability to take steps to keep yourself physically and emotionally healthy, especially when you are in situations that can easily cause damage to your health through stress or anxiety. Balance is not allowing one aspect of your life to completely take over all the other parts. Being fully present where you are at any moment is one way that good balance looks. When you are at work, you are fully bought into work, trying your best to focus on accomplishing the things you’ve been hired to do. But on the other hand, when it’s time to go home and the work is done, taking time to refresh yourself and get away from the worries of work is just as important.
Making time for self-care as an educator is vitally important. Without it, the risk of burning out sooner is much higher. Without unloading the burdens of a demanding job, we can lose joy for the work that we’re doing and not only do lower-quality work, but also hurt our quality of life. Especially considering the statistics of how many educators leave the profession within the first few years of teaching, this is something that teachers really need to work at. It can really feel easy to continue to give and give because we want our students to succeed, but if we have any chance of helping students succeed on the long term basis of a career in teaching, we need to have healthy boundaries with work and learn how to decompress afterwards.
Some of the strategies I plan to implement are finding a calming playlist to listen to on the drive to work. Sometimes I can get so caught up in what I have to do that day that I don’t take the morning as a time to emotionally prepare. I would also like to look into getting an app that helps track my moods so that I can monitor them better throughout the week. The guided breathing exercises that some of these apps feature would be very beneficial to me in the high stress of a week of teaching. I plan to share these things with my teacher mentor to help keep me accountable to utilizing these strategies.
Self care to me is the action of treating/taking care of your self so you don't burn out. It is also doing something for you and not because you have to. What self care feels like to me is sleeping in to feel well rested and not tired. What self care looks like is me reading having a relaxing candle burning or spending time with my friends and family so I don't feel burned out. what balance look like is not bring any work home so you can separate work and home life and not feel like work is coming into your home life.
Making time for self care will provided a clear mind, better decision making, on the job creativity, productivity, and healthy self esteem, on and off the job relationships healthier in your body and self satisfaction and value. It is important for educators to practice self care and balance as if the teacher is not doing this they will burn out. Teacher will not be a team player with other in our school. or be the person the student need in their lives.
Some strategies I plan to use is make a playlist for moods to help me get in the right mind set before, during, and after school so I can take care of my self when I need to. I plan to use stretching and breathing exercise so that I can take care of my self physically. I will tell my boyfriend of my goals so he can keep me accountable and make sure i do them.
